National Aboriginal Day 2016
Tuesday, June 21, 2016
The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Society is excited to host Whitehorse’s National Aboriginal Day celebrations on Tuesday, June 21st, 2016 at the KDCC. National Aboriginal Day celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada. Join us on Tuesday, June 21st at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre to commemorate these members of our community and partake in the national celebration through music, dance, visual arts and educational programming.
This year, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Society is bringing together a range of talented local musicians, First Nations artisans, and local organizations to provide a lively day of music and culture to the Whitehorse public!
The Longhouse Mainstage will feature performances by many talented Yukon artists, young and old. Our Outdoor Stage will showcase storytelling by First Nations Elders, demonstrations by the Aboriginal Sports Circle, Dene hand games, and more.
The day will include a Solstice Feast, compliments of Northwestel, with delicious stew and fresh bannock. There will be a First Nations Craft Fair running all day, featuring amazing local artists, as well as local food vendors. The Knowledge room will house booths offering information and materials including such organizations as Mapping the Way campaign and the Whitehorse Rapids Fishway. The Aboriginal Sports Circle will be running workshops on traditional First Nations sporting activities, and you can try a turn at Dene hand games. There will be a jigging contest, chalk artists and the Whitehorse Public Library Kid’s Activity tent will have face painting, story time, toys, music, and other activities for the little ones. Also returning this year will be the INAC Bannock Bake-off, with local and celebrity judges.
A big thank-you to all of our sponsors, including the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Society, Canadian Heritage, Kwanlin Dun First Nation, Northwestel, Air North, Dana Naye Ventures, Ta’an Kwach’an First Nation, and Chu Niikwan Development Corp., NVD, Westmark Whitehorse Hotel, Zero Waste Yukon, ATCO Electric Yukon, and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, Yukon Region.
